Classrooms with a Difference: Facilitating Learning on the Information Highway(2nd Ed.)
Elizabeth J. Burge, Judith M. Roberts
This introductory book describes three key aspects of the new classroom: the learning environment, models of course or workshop
design and the application of technologies to learning activities. It explores each of the technologies in the Series by presenting its physical characteristics, its potential as a learning tool, its appropriate usage and
examples of successful projects. The print Resource Kit contains examples of learner's manuals used with these learning technologies, information on ergonomics and evaluation instruments.

Compressed Video Learning: Creating Active Learners Judith M. Roberts
Each book has a common design consisting of three modules. Part 1 looks at how and why instructors use the learning technology as a tool. The content is as technology-neutral as possible; for example, audio
and audiographic learning can occur over telephone or Internet-based technologies. Part 2 consists of case studies drawn from the school, college, university and workplace. Coordinates for all persons
interviewed are provided in an Appendix to facilitate readers' ability to update information in the books or invite interviewees to be guest lecturers. Part 3 focuses on learning design and evaluation issues.
Each book "walks the talk" with an appropriate support tool. The book on Networked Learning has a computer disk that supplies hyperlinks to
the different sites mentioned in the book. The books on video and audio/audiographic learning are accompanied by a videotape demonstrating use of various types of equipment and interviews with some instructors.
Workbooks for Workshop Facilitators have been developed to support the application of all three books in professional development
activities in schools, colleges, universities and the workplace. They are described in more detail on this web site (see Workbooks: About the Books).
Electronic excerpts of all the books and workbooks can be obtained by contacting Judy Roberts at judyrobe@istar.ca
A related publication, A Learner's Guide to the Technologies, is also available and is described on this web site (see Learner's Guide: About the Book).

…it was refreshing to read text discussing the use of telephone systems to support learners….The approach is realistic at all times.

… indeed a must read. Maxim Jean-Louis, President and CEO, Contact North/Contact Nord and 1999 winner of The Commonwealth of
Learning (COL) Anniversary Honour for fostering excellence in distance education and open learning.
And from an international online journal: One major advantage of reading a text by authors outside of
the United Kingdom is the different perspective given to learning strategies and theories, and how they are applied to the multicultural setting. …the texts provide useful insights into the application of learning
technologies and should prove to be a valuable resource for both the novice and experienced user. Educational Technology & Society
